How to Use the Activity
During a familiar classroom activity, intentionally leave out one nonessential and safe material.
Instead of immediately replacing it, ask:
• “What could we use instead?”
• “Is there another way we could do this?”
• “What could we create to solve the problem?”
Allow children to suggest and test appropriate alternatives before providing the original material.
Why This Matters
When every activity comes with exactly what children need, there are fewer opportunities to practice adapting when something does not go as planned. This simple challenge encourages creativity, resourcefulness, collaboration, and cognitive flexibility.
Closing Reflection
“When something is missing, a new idea might be waiting.”
